What is a Tummy Tuck?

A protuberant abdomen can be the result of excess fat, weak abdominal muscles, or loose skin. Often these conditions do not respond to diet and exercise. Abdominoplasty is performed to correct the protuberant abdomen which is caused by skin excess and muscle weakness. The stretch marks, loose skin, and fatty deposits which are located between the umbilicus (belly button) and the pubic hairline are removed during abdominoplasty. The muscles of the abdominal wall are plicated, giving the body a tighter contour.

What happens at my Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Initial Evaluation?

At the initial consultation, your health history will be reviewed and the procedure you are interested in will be explained in great detail. Any alternative procedures, as well as the risks and benefits of surgery, will be discussed. You will view before and after photographs of Dr. Lawton’s patients, and all of your questions will be answered.

During the examination, your abdominal wall contours including skin excess, fatty deposits, and muscular tone will be evaluated. You will have the opportunity to point out the particular characteristics of your anatomy that you would like to improve or change.

After an extensive discussion, you and Dr. Lawton will arrive at the surgical plan that will best achieve your goals. It is our commitment that you leave this initial visit with a clear understanding of your surgical options, so you may make an informed decision. We are happy to answer any questions you may think of later by telephone, email, or at another private consultation. There is never an additional charge for these subsequent visits.

What happens during a Tummy Tuck procedure?

Abdominoplasty is performed in our own private AAAASF Certified Class-C Outpatient Surgical Center. The procedure takes about 2 hours. During surgery, excess skin and fat are removed. The muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened. For this outpatient procedure, we utilize general intravenous anesthesia administered by an elite group of carefully selected, highly qualified, board-certified anesthesiologists. The techniques employed are designed to provide a smooth, gentle anesthetic experience, and prevent postoperative nausea and eliminate postoperative pain.

What is the recovery like after Tummy Tuck surgery?

Rest is recommended after surgery. At home, you will have medications to ease the pain and treat the abdominal muscle spasm. We also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Surgical vitamins, arnica, and bromelain are used to reduce the swelling and bruising, and to speed your recovery.

We will see you in the office the day after surgery. By the fourth or fifth day, the discomfort should be significantly reduced. In one week, you will return for drain removal. By this time, you should be feeling well enough to be back to some of your normal activities. You should be back to work by the second week. Because it takes 6 weeks before the wounds reach 50% of their full strength, you will be able to return to vigorous activities only after this healing period.

We will see you in follow-up at 1 day, several times in the first 2 weeks, and then at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and every year thereafter. We will see you more frequently if necessary. There are never charges for follow-up visits.

What is the difference between a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction?

Tummy tucks are designed to remove excess skin and tighten loose abdominal muscles in the midsection. By contrast, liposuction is for the patient who does not have issues with excess skin or loose muscles, but simply wants packets of fat removed in the abdomen, thighs, or hips.

Choosing between a tummy tuck and liposuction ultimately depends on your body type and the results you are seeking. We may even recommend a combination of the two in order to get the look you truly want. If you need any more information about either of these procedures or would like help choosing which one is right for you, give us a call today at San Antonio Office Phone Number 210-496-2639.

I chose Dr. Lawton initially because he had the most before and after pictures of his procedures. After my consultation with him, I knew I wanted him to be my surgeon. I looked into having a tummy tuck 4 years ago. I even had pre op performed, and allowed others and myself to change my mind. 4 years later, I finally realize that my happiness, self-worth, confidence, self-esteem, and joy directly relate to MY choices! I consulted with several doctors, including Dr. Lawton. Dr. Lawton’s credentials, skills, and expertise are admirable and patient satisfaction is consistent. When I contacted Dr. Lawton’s office for a consultation, I was welcomed by his friendly and professional staff. As I am a ‘List Person’, he did not mind addressing each item on my list of questions and concerns. I left his office with feelings of comfort and trust. At age 59, my tummy tuck was performed December 8, 2016. During the past 3 months, Dr. Lawton provided me with straightforward instruction, guidance, honesty and understanding. When I over-extend myself, he firmly advised me without hesitation. HE CARES! HE REALLY, REALLY CARES!! Honestly, I have experienced swelling, discomfort, boredom, lack of patience, and excitement. Because of patient feedback, these feelings were not a surprise but an understanding that they are part of the journey. I am happy with my results at 3 months and really look forward to the continued body changes. Thank you Dr. Lawton for being part of my journey allowing me to continue to enjoy myself and LIFE!!! I RECOMMEND DR. GARY LAWTON!

I was so scared about the entire procedure, but everything went better than I expected. I had little to no pain and I didn't even need meds after day 5. The vitamins that were given to me before surgery have worked wonders. I still haven't seen the entire results and still swollen so I can't really comment on how my scar looks or how flat my stomach is but I was able to walk up stairs with no issues the day after surgery. I've been wanting to move around and do more, but I know I have to let me body heal. I was very satisfied with Dr. Lawton and his staff they were very professional and made me feel very comfortable and put me at ease. I am so thankful for this experience and would recommend this office. Wish I had more to say but I am still in my recovery stage but so far so good, and I am very pleased. Thank each and everyone who helped with this process. You all have been a blessing for me.
