Cheekbone contouring or Zygoma reduction

graphic of Cheek bone contouringZygoma reduction surgery is common in Asian population that have very broad cheekbone.

Dr. Boonipat uses an intraoral approach to make an inverted L cut to the cheekbone (zygoma) and fix it with plates. He will also make a 1 cm tiny incision in your sideburn to fix the arch portion of the cheekbone. Your cheekbone will be repositioned to make sure its symmetric and your face is slim and proportionate.

The surgery can be performed in conjunction with other soft tissue procedures or with orthognathic surgery.

Is there soft tissue drooping?

Your soft tissue will be lifted and reattached at a suitable position. There should not be long term soft tissue sagging.

What is the recovery?

Swelling and bruising in the first week, then things should improve over the next 1-2 months. Some swelling can last up to a year after surgery.

Activity restriction?

Avoid strenuous activity that increase your heart rate above 100 for 4 weeks after surgery.

Risk?

Temporary sensation change to your cheek region are common, but permanent sensation loss is extremely low.

Expect some asymmetry between the two sides especially during the swelling period.

You might have some mild discomfort with opening the mouth and swallowing.

The plate fixation is needed to prevent nonhealing of the bone. There is a very small risk of plate infection.
