Frequently Asked Questions About Microblading

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent technique that utilizes a fine blade and pigment to insert hair-like strokes in the top layer of the skin. This application gives a very natural, hyper-real look to sparse or thinning brows.

Who can benefit from Microblading?

Women and men with sparse, thinning, or light eyebrows. Those with thicker, more substantial brows can also benefit from Microblading because the procedure can help create perfect shape and symmetry.

How long does Microblading last?

Microblading typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on skin type and skin-care routine. Those with excessively oily skin will need more frequent touch-ups and color will diminish faster.

How is Microblading different from an eyebrow tattoo?

Microblading pigment is placed in the upper layer of the skin (epidermis), and the very top portion of the second skin layer (dermis). A traditional tattoo with a machine places ink three skin layers deep near the bloodstream.

  1. Microblading is done with a non-motorized hand-tool containing a very fine blade. Tattooing is done with a motorized machine, cartridges, and needles.
  2. Microblading pigments are not placed as close to the blood supply as tattoo inks. As a result, there is more stability in Microblading pigments and it is less likely the color will turn gray, green, or reddish as is often seen in faded tattoos
  3. Microblading is semi-permanent, while tattoos are considered permanent. Microblading lasts 1-3 years depending on skin type and skin-care routine.

Who is NOT a candidate for microblading?

  • Those with very oily skin and large pores. The excessive oiliness forces the pigment from the skin prematurely and causes the healed results to spread, blurring the strokes. Clients with oily skin should consider the combo brow procedure which uses a SofTap machine to insert a soft, powdery-looking color three skin layers deep. Microblading strokes are then manually inserted at the front of the brow.
  • Those with severe autoimmune issues (may require a note from the physician).
  • Clients who are just beginning, or just completing chemotherapy treatment.

Does microblading hurt?

While we cannot say the procedure is completely painless, most clients rate their discomfort as a “1” or a “2” on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most painful. Most people talk right through the procedure and almost universally proclaim that “it wasn’t nearly as bad as they expected.”

Working under the supervision of a board-certified plastic surgeon allows us to provide much higher-quality and effective anesthetics than are typically available to most permanent cosmetic artists. Lidocaine is the main, active ingredient in any Microblading numbing agent. Our physician association gives us access to a much higher percentage of lidocaine to ensure our clients are as comfortable as possible.

Limelight Microblading anesthetic protocol consists of the following:

  1. Pre-numb – this is a creamy, high percent lidocaine agent that is applied while you fill out paperwork, receive after-care instructions, etc. It is placed on the brow and deadens the top skin in preparation for Microblading.
  2. In-procedure numbing – An additional anesthetic is applied after skin has been opened during the first brow-pass of the Microblading procedure. This anesthetic contains lidocaine but has a very watery consistency which allows it to quickly penetrate the open skin for maximum pain control.

How do you choose the correct pigment color for me?

Choosing the right pigment color is a highly customized process. Pigment choice is made by taking many factors into account:

  • Skin undertones (warm or cool)
  • Ethnicity
  • Skin’s response to the sun (Fitzpatrick Scale)
  • Skin conditions
  • Your everyday look

How much makeup do you normally wear? Do you typically dress very casually or do you like to get done-up each day? These factors affect how dark, dramatic, or how subtle and natural the brow should be.

What is the healing process like?

No downtime is required after the Microblading procedure. It takes approximately 7-14 days for the brows to heal over and the skin to close. After two weeks, when the skin is done flaking, the skin will have an opaque, translucent quality to it. After about 4 weeks, the color will fully emerge and deepen for a very natural and beautiful result!

How many touch-ups are required?

Microblading consists of one initial appointment, and a mandatory touch-up 5-6 weeks later. The process is not complete without the touch-up.

Are consultations free, and what happens at a consultation?

We offer free consultations where we fully address your questions about the Microblading procedure. At this appointment, we can also map, trim, shape, fill-in, and clean-up your brows to give you an idea of what Microblading could look like on your face.

How do you achieve symmetry in the brows?

Limelight Microblading artists Marissa and Rosie use several techniques to achieve perfect symmetry in the brows. An advanced app by Phi Brows is one of our main tools. We also use ruler forehead stickers, measurement calipers, etc. Your face will resemble a grid for optimal symmetry and precision.

After the mapping process, we use an appropriate color pencil to fill in the shape. You are heavily involved in the process and must approve the shape and symmetry before any strokes are made with a microblade.

Are you licensed and insured?

Limelight Microblading, LLC is a licensed, insured business, fully compliant with the State Department of Health Regulations. Our artists the only Microblading technicians in San Antonio to be performing this procedure within the safety of a medical facility, under the supervision of a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Microblading – The Procedure

You may wonder how we get our results to be so natural-looking! Using a hand tool with a very fine blade, we make some strokes, then smear a layer of pigment over them and let it sit for several minutes. This will allow the color to saturate the strokes to form a natural-looking eye-brow, that can highlight your eyes, making your face brighter! This procedure provides the opportunity to use the most natural approach and gives a very natural hair stroke pattern. Find out more information about Limelight Microblading in San Antonio, TX.
