Sometimes that stubborn excess tummy fat just doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. This may be due to genetics, or the abdominal muscles being stretched from weight loss or pregnancy. An abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” surgery removes excess fat and skin while tightening the abdominal wall. It is not the same as liposuction, however it is possible to get liposuction along (see below for information on liposuction) with a tummy tuck to truly enhance the overall appearance of your abs!

A tummy tuck can also tighten abdominal muscles and skin after a pregnancy. This procedure is best done after a woman is finished having children, as pregnancy can re-stretch the abdominal muscles. It is best to have the procedure done once, and done right!

Usually with a tummy tuck you will be under general anesthesia for the operation. It is very important that you have someone who is able to drive you home after the procedure, and we also recommend you have someone stay with you for at least the first night following your surgery. As with all procedures, try to do your best to stay away from strenuous activity while you can.

Tumescent Liposuction:

Tumescent techniques of liposuction have revolutionized recovery with less bruising, swelling, and post-surgical discomfort. The incisions are also hidden in areas that are inconspicuous.

Developed by Jeffrey A. Klein M.D. in 1985, it is so far the safest form of liposuction. This technique is less painful and minimizes postoperative recovery time while achieving optimal cosmetic results. There is dramatically less bruising due to the procedure being less invasive.

Liposuction using the tumescent technique takes about 1 hour to complete. The tumescent fluid contains epinephrine to decrease the risk of bleeding and bruising, and lidocaine to decrease the amount of anesthesia required during surgery. The lidocaine also provides pain relief after surgery.

The techniques employed in this procedure are designed to provide a smooth, gentle anesthesia experience, while preventing postoperative nausea and pain.
